Lee H. Moultrie: A Lifetime of Service and Health Advocacy
With over 25 years in health education, Lee H. Moultrie — a military veteran, civil rights advocate, and healthcare expert — founded Lee H. Moultrie & Associates LLC. His mission is to guide individuals through the complexities of the healthcare system, simplifying decisions and empowering clients with personalized solutions. Lee's unique blend of experience, honed through a lifetime of service, including authoring, philanthropy, and Toastmaster speaking, underpins his deeply compassionate approach. He's dedicated to helping with everything from life insurance options to providing vital information on specialized topics like prostate cancer.
Lee's commitment to health advocacy is deeply personal. A 65-year-old retired U.S. Air Force veteran, his own journey with prostate cancer, diagnosed six years ago, began two decades earlier due to proactive health screenings prompted by a community program. This early engagement allowed him to initially manage his condition through "watchful waiting" before ultimately seeking treatment. His advocacy for healthcare, particularly for proton therapy and reaching diverse communities, predates his own cancer experience. In his late 30s, a simple flyer in a barber shop sparked his interest in prostate cancer, leading him to begin monitoring his PSA levels at age 39. This proactive approach, coupled with his work with the South Carolina African American Tobacco Control Network and the "Brothers Against Prostate Cancer Awareness Program," proved life-saving.
When treatment became necessary, Lee chose proton therapy at the UF Health Florida Proton Therapy Institute, drawn by its non-invasive, outpatient nature and the institute's reputation for compassionate care. He often speaks about the "nurturing environment" he experienced during his eight-week treatment, forming deep connections with both patients and staff.
Now cancer-free, Lee dedicates himself to sharing his story and championing early detection and proton therapy in various communities, with a strong focus on men of color. His involvement aligns perfectly with programs like the South Carolina Prostate Cancer Screening Program for African American Men (SC AMEN Program), which addresses significant disparities in prostate cancer diagnoses and outcomes. Lee understands firsthand why early detection saves lives and why access to advanced treatments like proton therapy is crucial. By sharing his compelling personal narrative, he can effectively reach and motivate individuals who might be hesitant or unaware of the risks and preventative measures. He firmly believes in the importance of health messages resonating within one's own community and has built strong relationships with diverse groups, including Hispanic, Asian, Caribbean, and Black Americans, emphasizing that regular healthcare appointments are crucial for everyone, regardless of their background. His powerful message is simple: "Early detection saves lives."
