Lee Moultrie III, a 65-year-old retired U.S. Air Force veteran, embodies the power of early detection and advocacy in the fight against cancer. His personal journey, marked by a prostate cancer diagnosis six years ago, began with proactive health screenings initiated 20 years ago, a direct result of a community program that piqued his interest. This early engagement allowed him to manage his diagnosis initially through "watchful waiting" before ultimately seeking treatment.

Lee's advocacy for healthcare, particularly for proton therapy and reaching diverse communities, predates his own cancer experience. In his late 30s, a simple flyer in a barber shop sparked his interest in prostate cancer, leading him to begin monitoring his PSA levels at age 39. This proactive approach, coupled with his work with the South Carolina African American Tobacco Control Network and the "Brothers Against Prostate Cancer Awareness Program," proved life-saving.

When treatment became necessary, Lee chose proton therapy at the UF Health Florida Proton Therapy Institute, drawn by its non-invasive, outpatient nature and the institute's reputation for compassionate care. He speaks highly of the "nurturing environment" he experienced during his eight-week treatment, feeling a profound connection to both patients and staff.

Now cancer-free, Lee is dedicated to sharing his story and promoting early detection and proton therapy within various communities, with a particular focus on men of color. He believes in the importance of hearing health messages from within one's own community and has built relationships with diverse groups, including Hispanic, Asian, Caribbean, and Black Americans, to stress the importance of regular healthcare appointments for everyone, regardless of ethnic background or gender. His message is clear: "Early detection saves lives."
